Spent a relaxing day and managed to snag a new-to-me movie, Richard Whorf’s musical It Happened in Brooklyn. Frank Sinatra thinks he will find all the confidence he lacks when he comes home from War to his beloved Brooklyn. He does eventually but it takes the help of equally disheartened Jimmy Durante, Kathryn Grayson and Peter Lawford to do it. Movie is uneven in the extreme but the good parts are good enough to make it a winner. These include the lovely ballad “Time After Time” and every moment Durante appears on screen. Who decided Lawford could sing and why did they insist on making him do it?
About Me
I’ve been a classic movie fan for many years. My original mission was to see as many movies as I could get my hands on for every year from 1929 to 1970. I have completed that mission.I then carried on with my chronological journey and and stopped midway through 1978. You can find my reviews of 1934-1978 films and “Top 10” lists for the 1929-1936 and 1944-77 films I saw here. For the past several months I have circled back to view the pre-Code films that were never reviewed here.
I have an account on letterboxd.com and you can find some extra reviews, lists, etc. at http://www.letterboxd.com/marie_dressler/
I have an Instagram account at @flickersintime.
I’m a retired Foreign Service Officer living in Indio, California. When I’m not watching movies, I’m probably traveling, watching birds, knitting, or reading.

Peter Lawford has trouble singing in GOOD NEWS and other M-G-M pictures.
So uncomfortable!
Time After Time is a terrific tune. Timeless!
Poor Lawford usually just seems miscast to me despite his suave British good looks.
How is the boat itself? Is it a classic steamer or a modern boat?
Sounds super relaxing to cruise up the river.
Movie suggestion: Buster Keaton’s Steamboat Bill.
From the inside it looks very modern. From the outside it looks like a paddle wheeler. There are only around 175 passengers. Sadly, I can’t watch any movies that aren’t on TCM because of the feeble wi-fi aboard. Only three days left of the journey and I’ll be back to tackle 1965.
Imagine if it was in Technicolor* That could’ve made the movie a little better than how it looks in B&W (Black & White).
But there’s a mystery to this movie that has never been solved since then, the dissapearance of that Amazingly Talented little boy in the gym number, Bobby Long*
If you know something about him please reply back to me on my email*
Thank U*
One of the best stars in the film, and actually my favorite star of all time now, is the magnificently talented Bobby Long*
The tap dancing boy who made his 1st movie debut and was never seen or heard from again. This is one unsolved mystery of child stsr that I believe deserves to be solved at Long last.
This kid had it all, he had what was rare to find in ANY child star now or then, he had what I call The Quadruple Thread of Talent.
He can sing, dance (especially tap), does acrobats and did some very minor acting in the movie. Not to mention his charm and adorability. He had the WHOLE PACKAGE!!
He had the face of a Star, but suddenly somehow he vanished after he did this one movie. There was a rumor that he had an “accident” while filming the “I Believe” number. From what I know he got badly hurt. Maybe the results he got from the doctor was Really severe, that it costed his chances of becoming a star.
He must’ve been devastated…
The poor kid never got a chance.
If he’s still alive I hope and pray that I get the opportunity to meet him and hopefully get him to tell his story and maybe help him with whatever struggle he’s dealing with and reunite him with an old friendhe hasn’t seen since they were kids.
I just can’t imagine that he’s 82-83 years old now, to me he will always be the Amazingly Talented little boy in the movie.
I pray it’s not too late for him.
God Bless Bobby Long*
Thanks for all the info on Bobby! I will watch out for him next time I see the movie. And thanks for commenting on my blog.
You’re Welcome Bea*
I also dug into some historical articles regarding Bobby. And I found out a good measure about him.
For example he started out when he was 5 with his parents’ support, then he got to perform for various relief shows during WW2 with bigtime headliners and even had the opportunity to have beautiful female backup dancers perform with him.
A talent scout discovered him in 1942 and signed him into MGM to do one short movie called Rodeo Rhythm.
And what makes him even more of a cutie is that he had puppy named Snookie*
What an Adorable pair they were.
Then in 1946 he got the call to be in It Happened In Brooklyn with Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, & Jimmy Durante. After the movie premiered the year after Bobby went back to touring and got a kick out of the young audiences and very last thing I found out about him was that he was going back to Hollywood (MGM Studios) after his tour to see if he could land a role in the next “Technicolor musical picture”.
He wanted to be in a Technicolor movie more than Anything, but that’s where he ends up missing and he was never seen or heard from again. I pray nothing bad happened to him at the time, he was 12 going on 13 after all. And he became the star he wanted to be…Oh he would’ve been the biggest heartthrob in history.
Please tell me what you think Bea* and god bless U*
Thanks for coming back! Yes, what happened to Bobby? I hope he had a happy normal life after turning his back on tinsel town.
Hi Bea, I don’t think he turned his back on Hollywood necessarily, unless he had a reason to or if his parents made him, but he had the dream of being in the next Technicolor musical and becoming the next BIG celebrity name since Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, & Gene Kelly all rolled up in one. And he was gonna do everything he can to make it possible.
But I believe something or someone got in his way from achieving that goal.
I have some theories of whether or not he’s still alive.
A. If he’s still alive, he’d be 85 today and hopefully married with kids, grandkids, even great-grandkids. And still got his childhood swagger moves.
B. Now here’s the tragic part: If he passed away. If he died, there must be a grave somewhere. I checked out some memorial sites and so far there’s no grave registered on his name that I was aware of.
Bobby’s full name was Robert Longston Jr, or just Robert Long Jr.
C. If there is no grave.
If Bobby didn’t die a natural death, then it leads me to my last theory: murder.
It would come as No surprise to me if we discover that Bobby and his family disappeared out of foul play. And it must’ve happened the same week Bobby & his parents returned to Hollywood after his last tour in March of ’47.
If Bobby got himself into a heap of trouble, overheard a dark secret, maybe even discovered a conspiracy or a sinister plot, then that same conspiracy mob was responsible for his disappearance…!
Oh I pray I’m wrong. But from what I know, tinseltown was full corruption at that time, but today it’s even worse. For a kid as extremely talented as Bobby was, no child star is safe if they get themselves involved with the wrong company.
If Bobby knew something or someone that threatened to his life, he had to tell someone besides his parents and when the culprits found Bobby and his parents…they trapped them, ambushed them…and killed them.
Like I said I hooe I’m wrong. But it just seems like no wonder why No record of Bobby’s short career was ever left recorded in entertainment nostalgia. Not even a mention of him coming from Frank Sinatra or Jimmy Durante, both of whom had worked closely with Bobby during the filming of IHIB (It Happened In Brooklyn).
But poor Bobby never got the chance to shine out in Technicolor. He would’ve been AMAZING being the star lead in that picture. And it probably would’ve been even More AMAZING if he had the opportunity to work alongside Shirley Temple at the time. Or even singing and tapping alongside with the Nicholas Bros!* Oh that would’ve been a TOP NOTCH number!
But in all seriousness, we don’t have all the answers yet. But I believe now is the time to finally solve Bobby’s mystery. That is (if he’s still alive) Bobby wants to have his story told.
I’ve started my own investigation and I’m not giving up on him until we Actually find him. Dead or Alive, Bobby Long will be found and his mystery finally Solved. Natch!*
Please tell me if you’re continuing your own investigation on Bobby. And Thank You*
