I have now watched 94 films that were released in 1966. A complete list can be found here. Despite my endless complaints, 1966 was actually a fairly strong year at the top. Not for Hollywood, however, which has only one film on my list. The films are only in very rough order. I gave the number one slot to the film I would be most likely to put in my DVD player if I had to choose today. I reluctantly left Alfie and King of Hearts off my list.
I’m excited to be moving on to 1967!
10. Nayak – Directed by Satyajit Ray

8. The Endless Summer – Directed by Bruce Brown

7. Sword of Doom – Directed by Kihachi Okamoto

6. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf – Directed by Mike Nichols

5. Blow-Up – Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni

4. Andrei Rublev – Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky

3. The Battle of Algiers – Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo

2. Persona – Directed by Ingmar Bergman
1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – Directed by Sergio Leone

Yay, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly on the top spot! Good call, Bea.
Congratulations on finishing up 66.
Hollywood does better in 67.
I’m so excited to start 1967. And I am going to start watching from the highest rated down this time so I can really work up some enthusiasm.
I love your work Bea – and really admire your fortitude! Such a lot of duds to sit through! Your updates and views are much appreciated though.
But I’m missing the rationale behind the source list of 94 on IMDb – what to include and what to leave out. I remember 1966 very well and saw most of the prominent films at the time. Do you know the selection criteria of Marie_D? The list seems to be missing a lot of films that were emblematic of the period. Of course most will NOT reward the time spent viewing them, but some absent titles would be considered essential 1966 viewing for one reason or another. Here’s a few:
From a film buff or art-film perspective: The Fortune Cookie (Wilder – OK, not his best, but very quirky); You’re a Big Boy Now (Coppola’s first commercial feature and probably his most likeable), La guerre est finie (Resnais – tedious, but de rigeur for art film buffs), Made in USA (Godard’s other film of the year and more interesting than Masculin Féminin).
Popular with the cooler set of the day: Cul-de-sac (Polanski – hardly a masterpiece, but very, very oddball), Morgan! (Reiz – from the UK, sums up the wacky, mod, anti-establishment mood).
Some real cultish items that also give the spirit of the times: Chelsea Girls (Warhol/Morrissey), Three on a Couch (Jerry Lewis – only for some, but considered a masterpiece by the French critics of the day), Thunderbirds are GO (the original spinoff from TV – in retrospect a doper film before its time).
Of course also missing are many that were big box office in the USA at the time – emblematic blockbusters of maybe questionable value today, but they certainly brought the moviegoers of 1966 out in their droves. Check out Wikipedia’s “1966 in Film” for a full list (but don’t bother with 90% of them!). Here are a couple that are of mild interest and capture the era: The Professionals (Richard Brooks – extremely popular with students of the day), Modesty Blaise (Losey – zany pop-art silliness), The Group (Lumet – somewhat tacky but tame take on the scandalous bestseller), Nevada Smith (Hathaway – pretty dull genre piece, but hey, Steve McQueen was an absolute cult-hero for with-it youth), The Wrong Box (Forbes – all-star comic cast from the UK; weird but amusing).
Of things like Hawaii, The Bible, Khartoum, The Silencers, The Singing Nun and The Glass Bottom Boat – the less said the better!
For the record, these would also be quite high on my list: Come Drink with Me, Le Deuxieme Souffle, Lord Love a Duck, The Wild Angels, The Chase.
Looking forward to 1967!
Peter – Melbourne (Oz, not Florida)
Thank you for your comprehensive comment! It did reveal films I would have watched if I had been more on the ball. My selection process is loosely this. Criteria: a) the film must be available for rent from Netflix or streaming. I don’t download movies to my computer. If it’s something I just have to see I might buy it but this is very rare b) I try to include all the available Academy Award nominees and the films from the 1001 You Must See Before You Die List and the They Shoot Zombies Don’t They list. c) I go on IMDb advanced search and look for top-rated movies that I want to include. I have a special weakness for inept horror and sci-fi films and those will generally be on there. Movies I have a nostalgia for will be on there. Musicals will very likely be on there. Sometimes I check Letterboxd lists of best films by year to see if there’s any I’ve missed. 1966 was a terrible slog for me for a number of reasons and I basically eliminated any big-budget Hollywood blockbuster rated less than 7/10 on IMDb. I don’t watch Godard unless I absolutely have to because of the damned List.
Now I would like to ask you a favor. You did bring up several films from 1966 I’m sorry I missed. Could you suggest good films from 1967 that are not on this list? I’d be very grateful.
P.S. Lived in PNG for 3 years and spent every possible minute wishing I could be in Australia! Still remember seeing the market and the fairy penguins in your beautiful city.
Yeah, I found Godard more irritating than enthralling back then (although I watched them all), and haven’t warmed much more to him over the years.
Hey, I worked in PNG for a year (Lae, 1970) – know what you mean.
When I get time I’ll post some suggested additions to the 1967 list.
I lived and worked in Port Moresby 1994-97. We lived for our getaways to Australia.
Great list. 94 films! Hollywood — catch up! Thank goodness for Mike Nichols leading the way, breaking down the Production Code. It has got to go if we are going to compete with world cinema.
1966 – the studio system is on life support. I expect 1967 to be a breath of fresh air. So many great Hollywood films to come!
25 thumbs up “I hate Jerry Lewis worse than” (insert just about anybody) – I will say that is based on his (so called) comedies. I haven’t been able to bring myself to anything else.
Mr PH – wow – no sarcasm intended.
Actually came here after stumbling across an “epic” and automatically thinking “that’ll be rubbish” then being surprised at the number of “this on the whole is surprisingly accurate and not bad” comments so went to the site that I respect more than IMDB, Criticker, and got a real surprise on seeing 82/100 – tho the handful of actual reviewed mentions (as opposed to simple scores) are less kind.
Then thought “well what does the Busy Bea think….oh not there”, then saw “I basically eliminated any big-budget Hollywood blockbuster rated less than 7/10 on IMDb” which explains it – is a near miss at 6.8.
The movie is Khartoum, (PH above said no) unwatched by me, and I was wondering if you’d seen it, outside of your listing work?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060588/
(I’ve said this before – you should at least have a look at Criticker, I actually am a member which is a huge compliment to them LOL).
I will take a look at Crickiter. I’m also on Letterboxd a lot. No, Khartoum will have to wait until I get back to 1966 again! It might have been good but I have to draw the line somewhere.
Forgot Letterboxd…while not a “must visit” (may reflect my asian-centric watching) I do visit there and have noted some handy reviews.
On another note I prepared a list of my likes for someone today and thought “mustn’t let all this typing go to waste….I know I’ll bomb the much pestered by me, Bea with it”….there are ones that I’ve mentioned to you before and I know you haven’t got the time outside your blog but just in case you may run across one….put here on “1966, a recap” purely as it was a grab bag and had no idea where else to post it. An emphasis on less serious productions mostly-
No animation.
I’ll mention this while I’m typing, saw it 2 years ago and still remember it (amazing for me LOL). it’s of a genre I dislike – many small stories but this one is simply stunning as they all come together….note I tried watching this twice and gave up (so did daughter and wife) – boring!!!!! But I kept seeing references to “this is really good” so, in the end, I gave it chance number 3 determined to watch it right thru – boy did I change my mind.
