1958 Recap and Ten Favorites

poster-touch-of-evil_02

I have now seen 91 films that were released in 1958.  While the year had its definite pleasures in the mid-range, it was a bit weak at the top end.  I have only two films left over at 9/10 for the also-ran list.  They are The Ballad of Narayama and The Defiant Ones.  The ranking doesn’t mean much except for the top two.  This is the first year in which the majority of films on my list were in living color! A complete list of the films I watched can be found here.

10.  Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – directed by Elia Kazan

  1. My only argument is that I would have placed The Defiant Ones on third, but then, I have not seen a fraction of the movies you have watched.
I think there will be more of an overlap in 59. The List has included a lot of movies from that year. That also means it will take me a long time to get through them.

    • Any of the 9/10 movies could appear anywhere on my list on any given day! I’ll be taking a breather after 1959 so we will probably stay about even. I’m looking forward to getting back to the 30’s especially and want to clean up any stragglers from the 1001 Movies List.

      • I spent some time recently reading up on movies, or actually 2-reelers of the tenths (for lack of a better word, 1910-20). If I decided to jump back to earlier pictures I think I would watch a bunch of those. There are some very interesting titles in that decade.

          • Well I’m, not here to ease your pain heh heh.

1958 Japanese gangster movie in the mould of the 30′, 40’s Hollywood gangster flicks. Sassy well played female lead and dour tough guy (also nicely done) battle the mob (yakuza).

            Well plotted also.

Has it’s faults as a lot of this genre does but overall a top gangster flick.

Loved what I saw as a prophesy of the future in the very last frames (not what is said but a visual hint).

            See it if you can.

          • Suzuki! This one is past me but I have two coming up for 1966 – Fighting Elegy and Tokyo Drifter

  2. Already mentioned TD earlier a few months(?) ago – overrated IMO. The other is unseen.

“past me’….seen you defy time before so that’s no excuse ma’am, just put it on the “one day” list.
